Queer Crowdfunding

Many queer people, young and old, don’t have access to the same level of familial support as many of their cis-het peers. For that reason, crowdfunding is a hugely important source for the queer community.

Here, we’ll be compiling a set of crowdfunding pages set up by some of our members, as well as their nearest and dearest. Whether you’re funding life-changing top surgery for an incredible non-binary actor, or helping a queer person of colour get through drama school, any money you donate will go directly towards supporting LGBTQIA+ individuals in need.

If you have a page that you’d like us to feature here, please e-mail us at info@queerly.co.uk.

Shona’s Disabled Writers’ Commission

Shona is a queer disabled writer and photographer. She is well known for her activism and blog, where she’s keen to platform other disabled writers. Shona says:

I'm lucky to have the platform I do but I am only one disabled person with one experience of disability so I want to offer my platform to disabled writers so they can share their opinions and experiences also. Disabled people are so often asked to work for free though and so this is not something I want to do, but I cannot sustain this financially on my own so this pool will solely be used to pay writers a fair rate. I hope this will offer writers both income and experience.

Ben’s Top Surgery/Gender Recognition Certificate Fund

Waiting lists on the NHS for gender dysphoria are often prohibitively long: many individuals are forced to wait upwards of 3 years to be seen for an initial appointment. What’s more, a person must receive such a diagnosis before they’re able to apply for any gender-affirming surgery, or even a gender recognition certificate.

For someone experiencing gender dysphoria, this wait can be genuinely debilitating, which is why many trans people have to turn to private healthcare for assistance.

Ben (he/him) is a trans artist, film-makers and LGBTQ+ rights campaigner, raising funds so that he can afford this life-changing treatment. You can find out more information about Ben’s work as an artist and film-maker here.
